To the friends and family of Mike,
We are truly sad for your loss. Our prayers and thoughts are frequent for those who suffer due to the anguish of losing a loved one. Please hold on to the good memories of him. We all experience this loss but the Bible teaches that soon death will end at Revelation 21:3,4
The scriptures brought us comfort when we've lost loved ones and I hope it helps by providing comfort at this most difficult time. For comfort from the Bible, please visit bit.ly/Endofdeath

I met Mike in 1973. We were both in the 6th grade at Cactus Wren elementary. He showed up on his first day wearing a sweeter vest with a tie and carrying a briefcase. We became friends. Mike was quickly moved the program for gifted children called “Project Potential”. I was not, but I was fortunate Mike did not leave me behind and we remained friends.
During our high school years at Apollo, we got around on 10 speed bicycles. We rode all over the place, even joining a bicycle touring club going on long distance rides. Then we got the crazy idea to go on a camping trip with our bicycles to a place called Dimond Point. This is on top of the Mogollon Rim about 150 miles from Phoenix (and uphill) it was quite the adventure. When Star Wars premiered in 1977 we rode our bikes to the Ciné Capri (the original one at 32nd st and Camelback) this was about 25 miles one-way from Glendale, yet we did it over and over to see this movie. During these years, we spent so much time on phone almost every evening, my parents had to get a second line installed just so they could use the phone.
We did not have too many classes together but we did end up in a Physics lab together where we had mostly unsupervised access to all the fun “toys” like lasers to experiment with. We also landed in a data processing class which involved encoding and decoding computer punch cards by hand. Then we were introduced to the TRS-80 computer and we obsessed over learning to program in BASIC. We also pranked the teacher with a few unexcepted surprises on the computers in the classroom.
Mike and I teamed up for the high school science fair, during our freshman year, demonstrating a house running on 100% on solar energy. We won, which came with a shot at competing in a regional solar energy science fair. We won that one too, which led to an article in the Phoenix Gazette newspaper and an appearance on a local TV program.
Mike purchased a ’62 four-wheel drive International Scout, but he did not have his Driver’s license yet. So, I drove it to my house to hide it, since he was not quite ready to let his mom know about this craziness. We spent months working on this bright blue “Sport Utility Vehicle”. We could remove the doors and top and it would go anywhere. Four-wheel-drive backroad exploring became our way of life. Then we discovered sand-rails or “rails” for sort. These were like the RZR RVs you see today but back then you built it yourself from old VW parts. Mike already had some familiarity with VW parts after helping his dad work on several VW Buses. Together, we salvaged some old VW bugs and pieced together a working rail. We eventually rebuilt this first car into a class II unlimited offroad race car. Mike built the engine and we both learned to weld and do lots of other fabrication and custom work. When Mike moved to Page, this car went with him. I imagine it was quite a sight around town for a while.
After many misadventures in the remote areas of Arizona, and occasionally needing rescuing, we gained some experience and became the rescuers more often than not. This is when we became volunteers for the Sheriff’s department in the Surprise Posse which specialized in Search & Rescue. This led to training as “2nd Man” which put us in uniform riding as backup for Lake Patrol. Mike went on to become a certified peace office in the MCSO Reserves. In college, Mike and I started training in Shotokan Karate. Neither of us were all that athletic or coordinated but thoroughly enjoyed our training. Mike leveraged these early martial arts lessons into the defense and tactical training he gained as a police officer. I remember one day an old beat-up car pulled up in front of my house and this grubby, shabby, bearded guy got out. As I was wondering how close my gun might be, I realized it was Mike. He was working undercover with a multi-agency drug enforcement task force. Talk about shocking! The sweeter vested, tie wearing geek was now a down and dirty gangster, and he pulled if off!
We acted like bothers most of the time, and after Mike’s sister Christine married my cousin Rocky, Mike and I were actually family. He was the best man at my wedding, as I was at his. Though I think he told Mark Jones the same thing :) Our adventures together became part of our own private mythology that we could reminisce about whenever we got together or spoke on the phone. During his years in Page we kept in touch, but less than either of us wished. I always thought of his move to Page as a “temporary” excursion for his job as cop, but I know he really thought of Page as home. He built his own house, made new fiends, learned to care for and ride horses, became a dog lover, a community leader and may other things thanks to his love for his wife Ann.
His motorcycle accident altered his life’s trajectory as well as that of his family and friends. Suddenly Mike was dependent on others just to get though each day. Through great effort and perseverance Mike regained his self-sufficiency in almost every aspect of his life. He reluctantly accepted help when he absolutely had to, but mostly he just found a way.
I will miss my best and closest friend.
