Obituary of Mary Matako

Mary Matako, 83, of Sun City, AZ, went to be with her heavenly father on 2/14/2022 after a long battle with cancer and a recent illness. She was born on 4/11/1938 to Burleigh Patterson and Violet Patterson in Rapid City, South Dakota. Mary moved to southern California when she young and grew up there living with her mother (Violet), sister (Patricia) and her grandmother and had a close relationship with her aunts. When she was 12, Violet married Martin Honald. She graduated high school early at age 17 and immediately attended the Pasadena City College and obtained her associate degree. Mary also attending nursing school but decided to pursue a career in banking instead. Mary worked as a banker the majority of her 63 years of employment. Mary excelled in her career - becoming a branch manager in the mid-70s and worked at several banking institutions. Mary married John M Sullivan and had two children, James (Jim) and Karen. After getting married, Mary relocated to northern California, Idaho, and Colorado and eventually moved to Arizona in 1974. John and Mary were married 41 years, until John passed away in June of 2001. She enjoyed golfing, traveling, the spending time with her family and friends. Mary married David Matako in 2002 and shared many adventures by traveling to Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Antarctica, Alaska, Hawaii and several other US states. Mary's travels included riding a camel at the Egyptian pyramids, cruising the Nile River and taking a Zodiac to a explore a glacier in Antarctica. Dave and Mary had a 16 year marriage and remained friends. Mary was deeply loved and is survived by Son and daughter-in law, James Sullivan (Rhonda Green); Daughter and son-in-law, Karen Sullivan (Chris Nagy); Sister, Patricia Ann Miller; Close friend, Dave Matako and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by death by her parents, stepfather, husband, aunts, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law. A memorial service will be held on 2/23/22 at 1pm at the Regency Mortuary.
